Leather is a material with such properties as durability, resistance to moisture, heat preservation at low temperatures. A leather bag can serve its owner for a long time and won’t lose its attractiveness on conditions of the right care.

Here are some tips to help you keep your leather purse or bag clean and attractive.

Always put on a new bag with water repellent. This treatment will protect the leather from the negative effects of moisture and ease further cleaning. For best results, apply water repellent twice allowing each layer to dry.

If you are intent on cleaning a leather bag, remember that you mustn’t use acetone, gasoline, various solvents. These substances may damage the structure and color of the material.

If you happen to spill something on the bag (coffee, juice, tea, mud), try to wipe the leather immediately not to give it absorb the moisture.

To clean the bag, do not use a brush with stiff bristles or rough sponges as they may damage the leather surface.

Avoid putting too heavy and big things in the bag not to deform it.

If a leather bag gets wet in the rain, fill it with tissue paper, so that it will retain its original shape, and dry it at room temperature for 1-2 days. Do not leave the bag near heat sources such as radiators, heaters, fan heaters, etc. All these items have a negative effect on leather.

If you have stains on your leather bag, you can take it to the dry cleaner’s. But if you decide to clean it yourself, firstly, check the impact of any cleaning product on a small imperceptible area of the bag (for example, internal pockets).

Remove the dust from the leather surface with a soft cloth dampened with clean water. Before applying a special cream for leather, allow the bag to dry. If the bag is very dirty, dissolve some liquid soap in water and clean the bag with a sponge. To refresh the color, you can add a few drops of 10% ammonia to the soap solution. Then dry the bag at room temperature and treat with leather cream. Leave the bag for some time and wipe the leather dry with a soft cloth (flannel cloth).

Remember that you should also take care of the internal side of the bag. From time to time you should clean the lining with light soap solution removing it out. Then thoroughly dry it.

If you want to keep your leather things until the next season, clean them from dust, dirt and stains, fill them with paper not to be deformed during storage and place into a cloth bag. If you do not have a cover, you can use a cardboard box. During the storage, leather has to “breathe”, so do not store your bag in polyethylene.
